Ceasefire negotiations/ Trump: I am angry with President Putin

US President Donald Trump said he is very angry with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after weeks of trying to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine.

In an interview with NBC News, the US president criticized Putin for attacking the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and threatened to impose a 50% tariff on countries buying Russian oil if he does not agree to a ceasefire.

"You could say I was very angry, furious when Putin started to get into Zelensky's credibility, because it's not going in the right place," Trump said.

Last week, Putin suggested the possibility of a UN-led government in Ukraine holding new elections and then starting peace talks.

Trump's comments mark a change in tone toward Putin. Over the past six weeks, Trump has made comments about President Zelensky and demanded numerous concessions from the Ukrainian president.

On Sunday, he accused Zelensky of trying to back out of a deal on sharing Ukraine's rare earth minerals with the US and warned of big problems if that's the case.

It is the first time the US has seriously warned Russia of consequences for delaying ceasefire negotiations, which appears to put the diplomatic ball back in Moscow's court.

NBC News reported that, in a 10-minute phone interview, Trump said he was very angry when Putin criticized the credibility of Zelensky's leadership, even though the president himself has called the Ukrainian leader a dictator and demanded that he hold elections. /CNA
