Chancellor Merz: It's time to punish Orban

The next German government has stated that it will pressure the EU to raise its voice against countries that behave badly, including Viktor Orban's Hungary.

Chancellor-elect Merz's conservatives and their potential ally, the Social Democrats, have agreed that the bloc will withhold funds and suspend voting rights for countries that violate key principles such as the rule of law, according to a draft agreement.

Although not mentioned, the draft agreement clearly refers to Hungary, which has been accused for years of destroying democratic norms such as restricting press freedom or limiting the independence of the judiciary.

The draft agreement between the CDU and SPD to put pressure on the EU is part of agreements between them that cover various issues such as migration policies or welfare spending.

"Existing safeguard instruments, from infringement procedures and withholding EU funds to the suspension of membership rights, such as voting rights in the EU Council, must be applied much more consistently than before," negotiators from Merz's conservative bloc and the SPD write in a draft coalition agreement on EU policy.

In 2022, the European Commission decided to block around 22 billion euros in EU cash destined for Hungary amid concerns about human rights and judicial independence.

He ultimately melted down more than 10 billion euros last year, sparking a backlash.

Another point of disagreement between the EU and Hungary is Orban's friendship with Putin. Budapest has repeatedly blocked sanctions against Russian oligarchs and bosses./ CNA
