Extreme flooding on Greek islands/Emergency measures taken

Severe flooding due to heavy rains and storms continues to hit eastern Greece and the situation is extremely urgent in the Cycladic islands. The islands of Paros and Mykonos are among the hardest hit.

Mykonos island in total lockdown

Mykonos experienced extreme flooding, with around 72mm of rain recorded in just a few hours. The island's famous Chora district, usually packed with tourists, was left almost unrecognizable as water poured down the streets. Schools on Mykonos, as well as on Rhodes and Symi, will remain closed on Tuesday while officials assess the damage.

Traffic ban and road closures on the island of Paros

In Paros, authorities imposed a complete travel ban on the entire island due to extreme weather conditions. The Fire Department reported severe flooding in Naoussa and Kolymbithres, where the water flow swept away vehicles. Two people were rescued from their cars near Naoussa and taken to safety. No missing persons have been reported so far.

The municipality of Paros confirmed that landslides, flooding and road collapses have made travel extremely dangerous. Emergency services have received dozens of calls to pump out water, but interventions are being delayed until the rainfall subsides. A firefighting helicopter attempted to reach the island, but was forced to turn back due to adverse conditions.

Army on standby for disaster response

With worsening weather conditions expected to continue in the coming days, the Hellenic Armed Forces have been placed on high alert to assist Civil Protection efforts. The Construction and Natural Disaster Management Command (DIKAFKA), operating under the General Staff of the Hellenic National Defense, is on standby to provide support in Paros and other affected areas throughout the Cyclades.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to stay updated on emergency advisories and avoid unnecessary travel as the extreme weather continues. /CNA
