Accused of Brian Thompson's murder/Death penalty sought for Luigi Mangione

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has instructed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, accused of the December 4 killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel.

Thompson, 50, was ambushed and shot on a sidewalk outside New York's Hilton Midtown as he arrived for his company's annual investor conference.

Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 230 miles (about 370 kilometers) west of New York City, after a five-day escape.

The request for the death penalty for Mangiona is the first since the return to the White House of President Trump, who vowed to restore federal executions.

" The murder of Brian Thompson by Luigi Mangione - an innocent man and father of two young children - was a premeditated, cold-blooded murder that shocked America," Bondi said in a statement that described Thompson's killing as "an act of political violence ."/ CNA
