NATO reinforces presence in Kosovo

The NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has announced that nearly 270 peacekeepers from the operational reserves of Albania, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania have been deployed to the country.

KFOR said the deployed personnel will operate on a temporary basis, alongside 200 reserve forces already deployed to Kosovo from the Italian “Sassari” brigade.

"These reinforcements - together with KFOR troops - enhance KFOR's ability to respond to any significant development of the security situation in accordance with the mandate emanating from the United Nations, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1244," the statement said.

KFOR reiterated its position that it continues to contribute to a safe environment for all people and communities living in Kosovo, in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission (EULEX).

KFOR is the third security responder in Kosovo, after the Kosovo Police and EULEX. The NATO mission is, among other things, responsible for securing the border line between Kosovo and Serbia.

KFOR has increased its presence whenever the situation has been tense in Kosovo, such as the armed attack in Banjska Zve?an in September 2023.

When it was first deployed in Kosovo, after the end of the war, KFOR had 50,000 troops, while today this number is close to 4,600 soldiers./ REL
