Elon Musk to step down from US government role

US President Donald Trump has told his cabinet and inner circle that Elon Musk is stepping down from his role in government.

The founder of Tesla and Space X will soon return to the business world, in a move that shook the stock market and surprised Washington.

Musk's designation as a special government employee meant he was scheduled to resign in May, but he is now leaving early.

"Elon Musk and President Trump have publicly stated that Elon will be stepping down from public service as a special government employee when his extraordinary work at DOGE is complete," said Trump's press secretary, Caroline Leavitt.

Musk has become a distinctive figure because of his style of thinking about the federal government.

Tesla shares have fallen sharply as sales have fallen. Reports that Musk is returning to his business roots have sent the company's shares soaring./CNA
