Floods on the Greek islands / Major material damage reported

Drone footage obtained by several foreign media outlets shows the extensive damage on the Greek islands following severe flooding that began on April 1.

Authorities on Paros worked to clear vehicles stuck in muddy floodwaters after torrential rain swept through the island, a popular summer tourist destination.

The bad weather continued into the early hours of Tuesday morning, blanketing nearby pastures on Mykonos with hail. A travel ban was issued for the island on Tuesday, excluding emergency vehicles. This prompted civil protection authorities to order the closure of schools there and on other islands, including Syros, Symi, Kalymnos and Kos.

The severe weather continued with heavy rainfall also reported on the islands of Chios, Samos and Crete, with vehicles being swept away by flooding and infrastructure damaged across the region.

According to the National Observatory of Athens, Mykonos had approximately 71.6 mm of rain as of 8:20 p.m., with 65 mm falling within a two-hour period between 5:10 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. Paros recorded about 36.6 mm of precipitation during the same time period.

Greece has been frequently hit by floods in recent years, with researchers attributing this condition to extreme weather and the warming of waters due to rising global temperatures./CNA
