NATO Security Meeting/ Rubio arrives in Brussels

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Brussels this morning, where NATO foreign ministers will meet to continue planning for the upcoming summit in The Hague and to discuss pressing security issues. The alliance's top diplomats hope to shed light on security plans in the US and Europe.

European allies and Canada are deeply concerned by the situation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who sees NATO as a threat, while the US works to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Ever since Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned last month that U.S. security priorities lie elsewhere, in Asia and on the U.S.'s own borders, Europeans have been waiting to learn how big a military withdrawal from Europe might be and how quickly it might happen.

These allies are keen to hear from Rubio what the Trump administration's intentions are and hope to provide some kind of roadmap that outlines what will happen next so they can synchronize planning and use European forces to plug any gaps.

In a statement, newly confirmed US Ambassador to NATO Matt Whitaker said that under President Trump's leadership, NATO will be stronger and more effective than ever before and believes that a strong NATO can continue to serve as a foundation of peace and prosperity./CNA
