Global trade changes/ Von der Leyen holds phone conversation with Chinese Prime

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held a phone call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang today, offering a negotiated resolution to the widespread changes caused by the US tariff move.

Von der Leyen stressed the vital importance of stability and predictability for the global economy during the call, highlighting the responsibility of Europe and China, as two of the world's largest markets, to support a strong, reformed trading system that is free, fair and founded on a level playing field.

China has responded to the imposition of 54% tariffs on its goods by imposing 34% tariffs on all US imports.

Von der Leyen urged Li Qiang to avoid further escalation.

In late March, Trade Commissioner Maroš Šef?ovi? visited China in an attempt to renew diplomatic ties with the Asian giant against a backdrop of deteriorating trade relations between the two.

The EU is seeking to combat excess capacity that threatens to spill over into the European market after being diverted from the US due to tariffs imposed by the US administration. According to a Commission statement, Von der Leyen and Li Qiang discussed the creation of a mechanism to track possible trade diversions.

Von der Leyen announced that the EU will strengthen its work on excess capacity by setting up an Import Surveillance Task Force. /CNA
