Hague Decision/Special Court Extends Detention for Thaçi, Kilaj, Fazliu

The Hague Special Court has decided that former President Hashim Thaçi, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu and Bashkim Smakaj, will continue to remain in detention in connection with the indictment for obstruction of justice.

This was confirmed by the spokesperson for the Specialist Chambers in The Hague, Angela Griep, during her weekly press conference.

In addition, Griep announced that in the trial against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selim and Jakup Krasniqi, there have been important developments during the months of March and April, adding that on March 26, the trial panel approved the Prosecution's request to allow a witness to give his testimony via video link, for health and safety reasons, a decision that was made public on April 4.

 "On 7 and 8 April 2025, the Pre-Trial Judge ordered the continuation of the detention of Hashim Thaçi, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu and Bashkim Smakaj, finding that for the four accused there are articulate reasons to believe that they may flee, obstruct the progress of the process or commit other criminal offences. The Pre-Trial Judge further found that these risks can only be reduced by continuing their detention," said Griep.

The DSK spokesperson also mentioned Hashim Thaçi's visit, which was made for humanitarian reasons, following the death of his father. She said that this decision was made taking into account the accusations against Thaçi for obstruction of justice and the risk of interference in the judicial process./CNA
