Confirmed by Secretary Rubio/ US-Iran nuclear meeting to take place tomorrow

The United States will hold direct talks with Iran on April 12 in Oman to address Tehran's nuclear program. The meeting was confirmed today by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Washington will be represented by special envoy Steve Witkoff, while Iran will delegate a senior official.

"We hope this will lead to peace. We have been very clear that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon and I think that is what led to this meeting," Rubio said at a cabinet meeting.

The announcement comes after President Donald Trump said the two nations were ready for direct talks, warning Tehran of grave risk if they failed, a claim clouded by Iran's assertion that Oman would mediate an indirect dialogue. A US official briefed on the matter said the two delegations would share the same room, suggesting a hybrid format.

President Trump warned that military action against Iran remains absolutely possible if negotiations fail to reach a deal, adding that there is not much time left to resolve issues related to Iran's nuclear program.

"If necessary, absolutely. If it requires military, we will have military. Israel will obviously be very involved in this, be the leader of this," Trump said when asked about the possibility of military intervention.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce reiterated concerns about Iran's growing stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which she said lacks any credible, peaceful purpose. /CNA
