Changes for Chinese imports/ Tariffs for phones and computers are exempted

The US administration announced today that it has exempted phones and computers from reciprocal tariffs, not including them in the 125% taxes imposed on Chinese imports.

U.S. Customs and Border Patrol released a notice explaining that the goods would be exempt from Trump's 10% global tariff on most countries and the much larger Chinese import tax.

The move comes after concerns from US technology companies that the price of devices could rise, as many of them are manufactured in China.

The exemptions, which date back to April 5, also include other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar cells and memory cards.

It was not clear whether technology imports from China would still be hit by a 20% tariff that was not part of the reciprocal tariffs announced on April 2. The White House has not yet commented on this.

Some estimates suggest that the prices of iPhones and other electronic goods in the US would have increased threefold if the costs of tariffs were passed on to consumers.

The US is a huge market for the iPhone, with Apple accounting for more than half of its smartphone sales last year, according to Counterpoint Research.

Up to 80% of Apple's iPhones destined for sale in the US are manufactured in China, while the remaining 20% ??of production is made in India. /CNA
