Smartphones and computers exempt from Trump's new tariffs

The Trump administration has exempted from the “reciprocal” tariffs, including 125% taxes on Chinese imports, smartphones, computers and some other electronic devices. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said the goods would be exempt from Trump’s global 10% tariff on most countries and the much higher Chinese import tax.

This marks the first significant easing of any kind in Trump's tariffs on China. Late Saturday, while traveling to Miami, Trump said he would provide more details on the exemptions early next week.

The move came after concerns from US technology companies that the price of the devices could skyrocket, as many of them are manufactured in China. The exemptions - which date back to April 5 - also include other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar cells and memory cards.

The White House said the exceptions were made to ensure companies had more time to shift production to the US.

These electronic goods are still subject to a 20% tariff on China. Some estimates suggested that iPhone prices in the US could triple if the costs were passed on to consumers.

The US is a major market for the iPhone, with Apple accounting for more than half of its smartphone sales last year, according to Counterpoint Research.

He says up to 80% of Apple's iPhones destined for sale in the US are made in China, with the remaining 20% ??made in India. Like Samsung, Apple has been trying to diversify its supply chains to avoid an over-reliance on China in recent years./ CNA
