Tragedy with 61 victims in Kocani / Two former ministers of economy are banned

Police in North Macedonia have detained two former economy ministers, Valon Saraçini and Bekim Neziri, as part of the investigation into the tragic fire in Kocani that killed 61 people.

According to information provided by the media, the investigation is expanding even further, including 23 other people suspected of the incident.

"By order of the public prosecutor, the action to detain more people is underway, in order to expand the investigation into the fire in Kocani. The competent authorities will inform the public in a coordinated manner once the ongoing actions are completed," the announcement from the Prosecution emphasizes.

Previously, the Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigative procedure against 34 natural persons and 3 legal entities, among whom were former Minister of Economy Kreshnik Bekteshi, former director of Protection and Rescue, former mayors of the municipality of Kocani and former heads of the Market Inspectorate.

All suspects are charged with having, in the period from 2012 until the fateful morning of March 16, collectively but each in their own terms, powers and responsibilities, not acted in accordance with the protection provisions and thereby caused a large-scale risk to the environment, human life and property. /CNA
