They financed Hamas with 7 million euros through associations/Nine arrested in

Nine people have been arrested by the Italian police and Guardia di Finanza. They are accused of having financed Hamas with seven million euros through associations. The precautionary measures against these 9 people who are in prison were issued as part of an investigation coordinated by the Regional Anti-Mafia Directorate. According to Italian media, measures have also been imposed against three associations.

The president of the Palestinian Association in Italy is also among those arrested, while Italian investigators describe Mohammad Hannoun as a member of the foreign branch of the Hamas terrorist organization and the leader of the Italian cell of the Hamas organization.

The investigation began with the analysis of suspicious financial transactions and was developed through exchanges of information with other Italian law enforcement agencies, with authorities in the Netherlands and other EU countries. According to investigators, the financing of terrorist activities took place through three charitable organizations. 

Specifically, the arrested are accused of having contributed to the criminal activities of the terrorist organization, for a total amount of approximately seven million euros, through bank transfers or other means, through associations based abroad, to associations based in Gaza declared illegal by the State of Israel because they belonged to, were controlled by, or were otherwise linked to Hamas or directly to Hamas members, in particular Osama Alisawi, a former minister of the Hamas “de facto” government in Gaza, who on various occasions requested financial support.

"Despite the necessary presumption of innocence that must always be recognized at this stage, the veil has been lifted on the behaviors and activities that, behind the facade of associations in favor of the Palestinian population, concealed support and participation in organizations with real terrorist aims of an Islamic nature. This is a risk to which our government is paying the utmost attention ," declared Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. /CNA
