Archbishop Joan in Brussels/ Important meetings with senior European officials

The Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania, His Beatitude, Bishop Joani, held a series of important meetings today with senior European Union officials in Brussels.

The Archbishop met with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas. The conversation focused on the historical importance of the work of Blessed Archbishop Anastasios and the vision of His Beatitude Archbishop Ioan for the future of the Orthodox Church of Albania.

His Beatitude emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the Church remains a strong and independent voice in Albanian society, a society that faces major challenges such as youth emigration and profound demographic changes.

The Archbishop also met with the Head of the European Parliament Delegation to Albania, Italian MEP Marco Tarquinio. This meeting carries special importance, given the key role that this delegation plays in the European integration process of Albania.

His Beatitude also met with the Co-Chair of the Working Group on Interreligious Dialogue in the European Parliament, Croatian MEP Zeljana Zovko. During the meeting, issues of religious freedom in Europe were discussed and the successful model of harmonious coexistence of religious communities in Albania was highlighted.

In all three meetings, His Beatitude emphasized that Albania's integration into the European Union is beneficial not only for religious communities and the Orthodox Church of Albania, but also for the Albanian people and for Europe itself.

These meetings took place within the framework of His Beatitude's visit to Brussels (12-15 January 2026), on the occasion of the conference that will take place tomorrow, 14 January, at the European Parliament, on the theme; "The Life, Work and Legacy of Blessed Archbishop Anastasios", organized by the European Parliament in honor of Archbishop Anastasios on the first anniversary of his death. /CNA
