A significant increase in seasonal viruses has been recorded in recent days in the city of Pogradec, bringing an increased influx of patients to the regional hospital. Since the Christmas holidays, the pediatric and adult services have been facing a high number of daily visits, mainly due to high temperatures, coughs and respiratory problems.

Children are the most affected, but adults are also showing up in large numbers at the emergency room. According to doctors, humid weather conditions and low temperatures have directly influenced the increase in cases of viruses and influenza.

"Since Christmas Eve, there has been an increase in the flow of children in pediatrics, but also of adults in the Pogradec hospital. In pediatrics, there has been an increase in children with respiratory viruses, with the influenza virus, affecting all age groups. The flow has been with daily visits of about 60-70 children, while among adults there have been about 70 visits per day with signs of fever ," says Bexhet Liçkollari, head of the Pogradec hospital service.

According to the head of the hospital service, the situation has also led to an increase in the number of hospitalizations in the pediatric ward, where many children have needed hospital treatment due to complications associated with respiratory viruses.

"Children should report to the pediatrics department on the second day, as should adults. There are many hospitalizations, where 100 children of different age groups were hospitalized in pediatrics in 10 days. Pediatrics is most affected by a humid weather, which brings respiratory viruses, while low temperatures affect adults," said Liçkollari.

Doctors appeal for increased care, especially for young children and the elderly, who are more at risk from complications that seasonal viruses can bring.

"Children should dress well, avoid staying in cold environments. The same advice applies to adults and to report any signs of the virus immediately," the doctor says.

Medical staff advise citizens not to neglect symptoms and seek medical help in a timely manner to avoid worsening their health condition. /CNA
