Will Erion Veliaj face justice?

Will Erion Veliaj face justice?

Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, since July 2025, has been indefinitely postponing court hearings and not appearing before the courts.

In a thousand and one ways: bring in a lawyer, remove a lawyer, bring in a foreign lawyer, don't show up for the hearing, resign a lawyer, fire another lawyer, with reports, etc.

For almost seven months, court hearings have been postponed and postponed. If Erion Veliaj had the will to face justice, with the acts, the evidence, the facts, he would stand face to face with the SPAK prosecutors, he would present his objections, he would refute the evidence. He would reveal his objections, he would present evidence that refuted the facts of SPAK, of prosecutors Altin Dumani and Ols Dado, and now perhaps we could have Erion Veliaj innocent.

But Erion Veliaj shows us that he is not innocent. An innocent person faces justice quickly and with integrity. An innocent person is not afraid to resign as mayor, because he resigns, faces the prosecutors in court in a civil manner, wins and returns even stronger than a mayor to become a prime minister tomorrow, to become a leader.

But Erion Veliaj is not like that. Erion Veliaj was tied to the mayor's chair, as Monsignor Noli says in "Culture Eaters".

Erion Veliaj is not going to court. The next trial is on the 19th. Last time he did not go to face him, but made a circus with the Prison Directorate and accused that the problem came from this institution or from the justice system, from SPAK, from the schedules, with his claims.

When the Prison Directorate van, as usual, according to procedures and protocols, left, Veliaj was asked to appear. The latter objected and did not go to court.

It demands special conditions in courtrooms where the EU has invested and says: "What is this cage? Why do I have this windshield?", when those are investments made equally for everyone. And we will not change the standards or the halls, we will not change the Albanians because Erion Veliaj was indicted.

If he is a man and has some dignity left, rather than finding labyrinths to avoid facing justice, it is better to accept his fate. By not facing it, he shows nothing else, simply and only that he is guilty. Even though he was initially presumed innocent because there is no court decision.

But someone who evades justice, does not go to face it, does so out of fear of being punished or out of their conscience that knows that they have been caught by prosecutors with incontestable facts and evidence and simply and only extends the periods of detention, finds a thousand and one ways to get out of prison, to go under "house arrest", to do a "compulsory appearance", so that in the end they do as few days in prison as possible.

Because the facts and the mountain of evidence for Erion Veliaj show that the latter cannot escape without receiving legal punishment for the 13 serious criminal offenses of his first file under investigation, as there is another file, which is a fraction of the first file, which is being investigated no less intensively than the first by SPAK prosecutors./ CNA
