New York faces heaviest snowfall in four years/ Thousands of flights canceled

A powerful winter storm has swept through the New York City area and the northeastern United States, causing widespread travel disruptions during the holiday season. The severe weather, with heavy snowfall and dangerously low temperatures, has led to massive flight cancellations.

According to data from flight tracking service FlightAware, more than 1,600 commercial flights across the United States were canceled on Friday, either to or from the country, while more than 7,800 flights were delayed due to deteriorating weather conditions.

New York's three major airports, John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia, have also faced the highest number of cancellations and have issued updates to travelers with possible further schedule changes.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions, warning of dangerous road conditions and frequent traffic disruptions.

The weather conditions have prompted winter storm warnings across much of the northeastern United States, affecting not only New York but also parts of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut, where more than 60 million people have received severe weather warnings. New York is expected to experience its heaviest snowfall in four years.

The severe weather comes during the holiday season, making it difficult for millions of people to return to work after the holidays and causing chaos on roads and traffic both inside and outside the United States. /CNA
