Bad weather with strong storms / Athens closes schools on Wednesday

Schools across the Attica region of Greece will remain closed on Wednesday due to bad weather.

The closure affects all public and private primary and secondary schools, including evening classes, as a precautionary measure to protect students and staff from heavy rainfall expected from noon onwards, according to Greek media. 

"Attica is under red alert. Taking into account the weather forecasts and the recommendations of the Risk Assessment Committee, we decided to close schools tomorrow," said Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias.

The National Meteorological Service issued an emergency bulletin warning of heavy rains and storms in central and southern Greece, locally heavy snow in the mountainous areas of Thessaly and Macedonia, and strong winds in some parts of the country.

Storms are expected to intensify in the eastern and southern Peloponnese, Attica, Evia, Sporades, the northern and eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese until Thursday.
