"A great folly"/ Trump on Britain: Our "brilliant" ally will

US President Donald Trump has said in a social media post that Britain's plan to return sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was an act of absolute weakness. 

The Chagos Archipelago includes the island of Diego Garcia, home to a strategic US-British air base in the Indian Ocean. Trump, in his tweet, called the UK's handing over the island a "great folly."

Amazingly, our “brilliant” NATO ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give the island of Diego Garcia, site of a vital US military base, to Mauritius, and to do so WITHOUT ANY REASON. There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness.

These are International Powers that know only STRENGTH, which is why the United States of America, under my leadership, is now, after just one year, respected as never before. The United Kingdom's giving up of vitally important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland should be purchased. Denmark and its European allies must DO THE RIGHT THING. Thank you for your attention to this matter. 

The US-backed deal to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was signed in London last May. Under the terms of the deal, Britain would return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius but retain control of the air base on Diego Garcia on a 99-year lease. The signing of the deal to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was delayed after Trump was sworn in in January 2025 and London was to give the new US administration time to consider the details of the plan. /CNA
