World Economic Forum in Davos/DW: Trump dominates the meeting

Donald Trump's participation in the Davos Forum aroused great interest: Global conflicts, US politics, and a delegation led by President Trump will be at the center of the World Economic Forum.

The meeting comes at a time when US President Donald Trump is trying to dismantle the international order: from suspending established trade rules and withdrawing from numerous international organizations, including the UN Climate Agreement, to arresting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and threatening to annex Greenland. Donald Trump's speech on Wednesday in Davos is being watched with interest, especially against the backdrop of the US president's threats to take over the island of Greenland, which belongs to NATO partner Denmark.

Trump's attack on international rules, which have been in place since World War II, and its impact on world peace, politics and the economy will be among the central topics of the five-day forum, which opened on January 19 under the motto "In the Spirit of Dialogue."

In addition to Donald Trump, more than 60 heads of state and government will come to Davos, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who will give a speech in Davos on Thursday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Argentine President Javier Miel are also in Davos, while EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa are also expected in Switzerland.

Extremely large delegation from the USA

Trump is leading the largest U.S. delegation in history to the World Economic Forum in Davos, consisting of five cabinet members and other senior officials. The delegation includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. It sets the stage for high-level talks on Ukraine, Venezuela and the Gaza Strip. Iran, where eyewitnesses report a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests, is also likely to be on the agenda.

As part of this summit, Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Kiev's G7 allies - including the heads of state and government of Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Canada, as well as the President of the European Commission - to ensure US support for security guarantees for Ukraine following a possible peace deal with Russia.

The strong US presence is also reinforced by the fact that this year, for the first time, Davos has a "US House" - an event venue in a small church on the main promenade, where US representatives will hold meetings to establish contacts with investors.

The organization, which has existed since 1971, aims to promote dialogue, but is itself facing difficulties as multilateralism and free trade have lost relevance. /DW
