Ryanair rejects Starlink WI-FI/ Musk warns he will buy the airline to fire its

Ryanair's decision to bypass Starlink WiFi has turned into a major public spat between Elon Musk and Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary.

The clash erupted in public after O'Leary dismissed Musk and his satellite internet business in a radio interview on Ireland's Newstalk.

Responding to Musk calling him "misinformed" about Ryanair's refusal to install Starlink Wi-Fi, O'Leary told listeners that he wouldn't pay any attention to Elon Musk.

“He’s a very rich idiot, but an idiot nonetheless,” O’Leary said. He also described Musk’s social media platform X as a water well.

Musk hit back at X, writing: "Ryanair's CEO is a huge idiot. Fire this idiot."

Ryanair on Platform X also joined in on the debate, mocking Musk during a reported outage on its platform, replying: "Maybe you need Wi-Fi?"

Behind the insults lies a fundamental disagreement about the costs and performance of the aircraft. Ryanair has publicly ruled out installing Starlink on more than 600 of its Boeing 737s, arguing that external antennas would increase air resistance and fuel consumption.

O'Leary has said the technology would impose a penalty of about 2 percent on fuel and could cost the airline hundreds of millions of dollars a year, a trade-off he says doesn't make much sense on short-haul flights where passengers are unlikely to pay for connections.

Musk disputes these figures, citing airlines already flying Starlink-equipped aircraft and arguing that fast internet will increasingly shape passenger choice.

As the clashes continued on Platform X, one user suggested that Musk simply buy Ryanair and fire the CEO, to which Musk replied: "Good idea." / CNA
