Train collision in Spain/ Death toll rises to 21, 73 injured

The death toll from the collision of two trains in Cordoba, Spain, has risen to 21. The accident injured 73 others, 15 of whom are in serious condition.

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente warned via “X” that the collision was very strong and there was a risk that the number of victims would be even higher.

Just 10 minutes after the journey began, the train from Malaga derailed for unknown reasons and hit two carriages of a train on a siding heading to Huelva. The collision also caused the second train to derail.

A total of 317 people were on both trains. Many of the passengers were forced to climb onto the roof of one of the carriages to get out, while others broke the windows with emergency hammers. Immediately after the incident, search and rescue teams went to the scene and began working to rescue those trapped on the train.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the families of the victims through a reaction on the "X" platform.

"No words can ease such great sorrow, but I want you to know that the entire country is with you in this very difficult moment ," the prime minister said, among other things. 

The Spanish royal family also expressed its concern over the serious accident and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. Meanwhile, the causes of the tragic accident are still unknown. /CNA
