Fire engulfs shopping mall in Pakistan/ Six dead, firefighters battling flames

A fire has engulfed a shopping mall in the Pakistani city of Karachi, killing six people. A firefighter is among the dead, according to reports, while more than 20 people have been injured.

Meanwhile, it is suspected that there are still people trapped inside the multi-storey shopping mall. Parts of the shopping mall, Gul Plaza, which contains 1,200 shops and covers 8,000 square meters, have collapsed, and this, according to local officers, is hampering search and rescue efforts.

20 fire engines have been deployed to the scene and are working to bring the flames under control, but there are concerns that the shopping center could collapse further.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his condolences and asked the government of Sindh province, where Karachi is located, to conduct a comprehensive review of security measures in commercial and residential buildings across the area. /CNA
