Protests in Greenland and Denmark against Trump's plans

Thousands of people in Greenland and Denmark have protested against US President Donald Trump's plans to annex Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Demonstrations were held in Danish cities, including the capital, Copenhagen, as well as in the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk. The rallies coincided with a visit to Copenhagen by a delegation from the US Congress. Its leader, Democratic Senator Chris Coons, described Mr Trump's rhetoric as "non-constructive".

Trump has not ruled out forcibly taking Greenland, which he insists is critical to America's national security - and has now announced he will impose tariffs on European countries that oppose his plan.

"Goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland will be subject to a 10% US tariff starting February 1 ," he wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.

Greenland is sparsely populated but rich in resources, and its location between North America and the Arctic makes it well-positioned for early warning systems in the event of missile attacks and for monitoring ships in the region.

Trump has previously said that Washington would take the territory the easy way or the hard way, an apparent reference to buying the island or taking it by force. In Copenhagen on Saturday, banners reading: "Hands off Greenland" and "Greenland for Greenlanders" were held. Saturday's protests are being organized by NGOs in Greenland and Denmark.

"We demand respect for the Danish Kingdom and for Greenland's right to self-determination," said Camilla Siezing, chairwoman of the Inuit, an umbrella group of Greenlandic associations.

Opinion polls show that 85% of Greenlanders oppose uniting the territory with the US. Other European countries have backed Denmark, arguing that the security of the Arctic region should be a shared responsibility of NATO. France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom have sent a small number of troops to Greenland on a so-called reconnaissance mission. /CNA
