Greenland/Russia troop deployment: Denmark is escalating military tensions in

Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, has accused NATO of trying to militarize the Arctic, amid US President Donald Trump's demand that his country take over Greenland and announcements from European countries to deploy their troops.

NATO member states, including Denmark, are using the perceived threat from Russia and China to expand their military presence in the Arctic, the ambassador said. For Vladimir Barbin, Copenhagen has adopted a confrontational approach, involving NATO and escalating military tensions in the Arctic.

"Russia is not drawing up plans for an attack on its Arctic neighbors, is not threatening them with military action, and does not want to invade their territories," Barbin continued, referring, indirectly but clearly, to US President Trump.

However, Moscow has also warned against any possible disregard for Russia's interests in the Arctic in the past. Russia, with a long coastline on the Arctic Ocean, considers the Arctic part of its sphere of influence. Moscow is making greater use of the sea lanes that pass through it and is expanding its military presence.

US President Trump has sought the resource-rich Danish territory for national security reasons, citing the dangers he sees from the presence of China and Russia, while never ruling out military action.

After unsuccessful talks in Washington last Wednesday to resolve the dispute, EU member states, including Germany and France, announced they were sending troops to the island on a mission to support Denmark. /CNA
