White House: European troops in Greenland will not affect Trump's plans to

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, speaking after leaving the White House, said that a US takeover of Greenland was absolutely not necessary.

The White House said Thursday that the deployment of European troops to Greenland has no impact on US President Donald Trump's plans to take control of the Arctic island from Denmark.

"I don't think the troops in Europe affect the president's decision-making process, nor do they affect his intent to buy Greenland at all," said Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt when asked about their deployment.

Her comments come on the same day that European military personnel began arriving in Greenland, hours after a meeting between American, Danish and Greenlandic officials in Washington failed to resolve what the Danish foreign minister called "fundamental disagreements" over the mineral-rich Arctic island.

France, Sweden, Germany and Norway announced on Wednesday that they would deploy military personnel as part of a reconnaissance mission in Greenland's capital, Nuuk./ CNA
