Trump says it publicly: Zelensky is obstructing the peace deal, not Putin

United States President Donald Trump has said that it is Ukraine that is preventing a possible peace agreement from being reached, not Russia, taking a stance that contradicts that of European allies, who have repeatedly stressed that Moscow has little interest in ending the war in Ukraine.

In an exclusive interview with Reuters, held on Wednesday in the Oval Office, Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end the nearly four-year occupation of Ukraine, while according to him, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is more reserved.

“I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump said of Putin. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”

Asked why US-led negotiating efforts have yet to bring about a resolution to Europe's largest land conflict since World War II, Trump replied curtly: "Zelensky."

The US president's comments signal a new frustration with the Ukrainian leader. Trump and Zelensky have long had a tense relationship, although contacts between them appear to have improved during Trump's first year back in the White House.

In some cases, Trump has shown himself more willing to accept Putin's statements and assurances, an approach that has caused concern in Kiev, in European capitals and even among American lawmakers, including some from the ranks of the Republican Party./ CNA
