Carney's visit to Beijing/ China says it is key to renewing relations

China praised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Beijing this week, calling it "important" in working to recalibrate ties after months of intense re-engagement.

The remarks by China's top diplomat Wang Yi were made in a meeting with Canadian counterpart Anita Anand, who is part of Carney's delegation on the first visit by a Canadian prime minister since 2017.

"This marks the first visit of a Canadian prime minister to China in eight years, representing a significant and important moment for our bilateral relations," Wang said.

China is willing to deepen cooperation with Canada by eliminating "interference," Wang added, but did not specify the source of the interference.

On the other hand, Anand praised the behind-the-scenes work in organizing Carney's upcoming meetings with China's leaders to "ensure that these meetings are successful," the Canadian prime minister's office said in a statement.

Since a positive meeting between Carney and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea last year, the countries have shown a shared desire to end periods of tension that have marred relations since 2017.

The latest tension came after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024, following similar US restrictions.

China retaliated last March with tariffs on more than $2.6 billion in Canadian agricultural and food products, such as canola oil and meal, leading to a 10.4% drop in Chinese imports of Canadian goods in 2025, customs data showed Wednesday.

The reengagement with China has also been fueled by a push to diversify export markets, after US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada last year and suggested the early US ally could become his country's 51st state.

Efforts to launch a new dialogue have intensified since Carney took office last year, with senior officials from both sides scheduling meetings and phone calls that paved the way for the leaders' meeting in October in South Korea./CNA, translated by Reuters
