Labubu doll manufacturer accused of exploiting workers

A labor rights organization claims to have found evidence of worker exploitation at a Chinese factory that produces Labubu dolls, which went viral and set a record number of sales.

China Labor Watch (CLW), a US-based non-governmental organization, claims that its investigation found that one of Pop Mart's suppliers forced employees to work excessive overtime shifts, signed empty or incomplete contracts, and did not give them paid leave.

Labubu dolls have become very popular around the world in recent years and are best known for selling the toys in mystery boxes, where the color of the doll is not known until the box is opened.

The Beijing-based toy retailer said it appreciated the details from the investigation and would ask the companies that make its toys to correct their practices if the allegations are proven true.

Pop Mart added that it conducts regular audits of its suppliers, including annual independent third-party reviews conducted by internationally recognized inspectors.

The organization reported labor problems at the Shunjia Toys Co Ltd factory in Xinfeng County, including what it called illegal overtime, unclear contractual practices, and a lack of safety training and protection.

No child labor was identified at the factory, but it had employed 16-year-old workers who were subjected to the same working conditions as adults, without the special care required under Chinese law, CLW said.

The organization urged Pop Mart to take immediate action to address the problems in its supply chain. The nonprofit said the firm should compensate affected workers and ensure its production line complies with Chinese labor laws and internationally recognized labor standards.

Labubut - fictional elf-like creatures with a row of large teeth - have become extremely popular. The craze has caused long lines in stores around the world.

Endorsements from celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Lisa from K-pop group Blackpink have helped Pop Mart become a major toy retailer. /CNA
