The EC expects the full lifting of measures against Kosovo in the coming weeks

The European Commission (EC) has confirmed that it expects the full lifting of measures against Kosovo in the coming weeks.

Jan Gert Koopman, director of the EC Enlargement Directorate, emphasized that this involves the release of more than 400 million euros, including measures that the EC had initially lifted in December last year.

He explained that the institutions are working in parallel on programming funds and contracting projects to be financed.

"Between programming and contracting, we would in practice remove all financial measures in the coming weeks, and this is exactly what our president has stated and what we are currently doing," Koopman declared before the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee.

The European Union (EU) imposed punitive measures against Kosovo in 2023, without following the relevant procedures required for such a decision.

The measures involved the suspension of funding and bilateral meetings between European officials and representatives of the Kosovo Government.

The measures were imposed in response to tensions in the Serb-majority north of Kosovo, after the Albanian mayors of four municipalities in the north took office.

At that time, there were also clashes between Serbian protesters and security forces, including members of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR.

While economic measures are being lifted, there is still no official explanation of how political measures will be handled, namely meetings between EU officials and those of the Kosovo executive.

European officials emphasize that there is an agreement on this issue as well and that it will be implemented "spontaneously", immediately after the constitution of the new Kosovo Assembly and the formation of the new Government resulting from the early parliamentary elections on December 28. /REL
