A week without internet/ Protests in Iran under digital censorship

The internet shutdown in Iran has reached one week today, as the decision that affected online communication and information was made on January 8th.

The decision was made in the midst of a massive protest movement and is still in effect, as announced today by the non-governmental organization Netblocks, which monitors cybersecurity.

"Exactly a week ago, Iran was plunged into digital darkness when authorities blocked the internet throughout the country," Netblocks wrote on social media.

Human rights groups say the digital blackout is intended to hide the extent of the crackdown on protesters, while security forces have used violence to suppress the demonstrations. /CNA
