While US President Donald Trump continues to threaten to take control of Greenland, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius says he is following developments calmly, because according to him, we are dealing with a game of strength and power over who will gain what kind of influence in Greenland.

"But ultimately it's always about the same thing: Greenland must be secured from the approach and influence of others ," the Social Democratic politician said on the television show "Tagesthemen." This is especially true given the growing presence of Russian and Chinese submarines in Greenland.

Pistorius: I don't expect the worst to happen

He does not expect the US to intervene, Pistorius said. "I am somewhat relaxed, because I do not believe the worst will happen," the minister said.

The US is not only made up of the Trump administration, but also the Congress and Senate. Furthermore, there is little public support for Trump's efforts to annex Greenland.

According to Minister Pistorius, there is little point in "speculating about what would happen if Trump did this or that."

Sending German soldiers a random coincidence

Regarding the German military presence in Greenland, Pistorius stated that it is about "the joint fulfillment of our obligations to protect NATO territory."

The Arctic has developed into a region "in which Russia, and increasingly China with its growing navy, play a significant role." Russia is remilitarizing the region, Pistorius said.

The current mission of German Bundeswehr soldiers in Greenland is an inspection mission to see "how we can conduct large-scale military exercises there."

It's just a "coincidence" that German soldiers went to Greenland at this very time. The aim is "to see what the conditions are like and to gather facts." /DW
