Iran's Supreme Leader Admits Thousands of People Were Killed During Recent

Iran's supreme leader has publicly acknowledged for the first time that thousands of people have been killed, some of them inhumanely, during the recent protests that have gripped the country for several weeks.

According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), during the unrest that began on December 28, 3,090 people have lost their lives due to the violent response of the authorities.

Meanwhile in a speech on Saturday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said thousands of people had been killed during the unrest, blaming the deaths on what he called "rebels."

US President Donald Trump recently called on Iranian anti-government demonstrators to continue protesting and threatened military intervention if security forces kill them.

Since then, the protests have morphed into calls to end the rule of Iran's supreme leader. The Iranian government has called the demonstrations riots supported by Iran's enemies.

During his speech on Saturday, Khamenei also said that Iran considered President Trump a "criminal" and said the US must be "held accountable" for the recent unrest.

Trump has yet to respond to the Iranian supreme leader. The US State Department said today it had heard reports that the Islamic Republic is preparing options to target US bases.

The US said Iran would face a "very powerful force" if it launched such an attack and warned Tehran "not to play games with President Trump." /CNA
