Fighting in the Gaza Strip/ 68 million tons of rubble

The new Interim Administration for the Gaza Strip held its first meeting. "The Palestinians were looking forward to the establishment of this committee and the start of its work," the committee's head, Ali Shaath, said after the meeting in Cairo. The committee will govern the Palestinian territory under US supervision.

The Gaza Strip has been ruled for nearly two decades by the Islamist militant group Hamas. The Islamist militant terrorist group Hamas and the Palestinian Authority agreed on Wednesday (14.01) on the composition of the technocratic body. It is made up of 15 Palestinians, led by Ali Shaathi.

Millions of tons of debris from the rubble

In an interview with Egyptian state media, Shaathi said he wants to focus first on rebuilding infrastructure and the economy. According to Shaathi, this is likely to take about three years. Of particular importance is the construction of new housing, he said. This would restore dignity to the displaced people who have so far been sheltering "in tents that the wind blows away."

According to an analysis by German media outlets ARD and BR, around two-thirds of all homes in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed during the more than two-year war with Israel. In cities such as Gaza City and Rafah, the figure is even higher.

Shaath: Waste to be bulldozed into the sea

Shaathi's statement that the rubble could be bulldozed into the sea was met with skepticism in both Gaza and Israel. Shaathi said there are about 68 million tons of rubble that need to be cleared.

Unexploded ordnance is a particular problem, as it complicates cleanup efforts. The United Nations estimates the cost of reconstruction at around $50 billion. According to the UN, reconstruction could take until 2040. Another problem is the disarmament of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The terrorist organization refuses to surrender its weapons voluntarily. /DW
