Trump's threats to Greenland/German politician: Boycotting the World Cup

A German politician has suggested that a boycott of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico could be a "solution" to US President Donald Trump's threats against Greenland.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that his country should buy Greenland, the world's largest island, for national security reasons.

His request has been opposed by Greenland's leaders and NATO member Denmark, whose island is a semi-autonomous territory. Meanwhile, Trump has not ruled out using military force to achieve his goals.

Amid ongoing controversy, the United States is preparing to host the soccer World Cup this summer, although experts warn that the participation of some countries could be jeopardized as a result of escalating political and military tensions.

In comments to the German newspaper BILD, Jurgen Hardt (CDU), a Christian Democratic Union politician, said that a boycott would be in response to Trump's threats against Greenland.

"Abandoning the World Cup tournament would be considered a last resort so that Trump can come to his senses on the Greenland issue ," he said, before emphasizing that Trump has made it clear "how important this championship is to him."

Hardt is the first senior politician to suggest the word "boycott" in connection with the issue.

Since its founding in 1930, the German national team has only missed two World Cups. They did not participate in the first tournament in 1930 and were excluded from the 1950 edition after World War II.

Putting football aside, West Germany boycotted the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, joining the protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. /CNA
