Good news for migrants/ 90,000 residence permits in Greece towards unblocking

Greece has introduced a new draft law by the Ministry of Migration and Asylum that aims to address chronic delays in issuing and renewing residence permits for migrants living in the country.

With the new rules, around 90,000 blocked permits will be unblocked immediately, while it is expected that around the same number of other pending requests will be regulated within the next two years, as reported in the Greek media.

The ministry insists that the reforms aim to reduce bureaucracy, improve the functioning of the system and support the Greek economy by filling gaps in the workforce, although the government also emphasizes a strict stance on illegal migration.

"With the new draft law on legal immigration, we are putting an end to the chronic delays and bureaucratic gridlocks that have affected workers and businesses," Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris said in an interview.

According to data, around 793,000 migrants with residence permits live in Greece, but almost 293,000 applications for residence permits are still pending due to administrative delays, which has caused insecurity for migrants in terms of work and social integration.

The changes also include the automatic renewal of certain permits, especially when the migrant continues to work for the same employer, as well as measures to allow migrants who have been in the country legally for five years or more to review previous applications if they were rejected for formal reasons./CNA
