"Europe is weak"/ US Treasury Secretary: Trump will not back down from

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a television interview that Europe cannot provide for itself, and that is why President Donald Trump is looking to take over Greenland.

Bessent said Europe talks tough but lacks the strength to defend key regions. He also dismissed threats from the European Union to block a tariff deal reached last year. He said the agreement was not final and could be changed.

"First of all, the trade deal is not finalized, and an emergency action could be very different from another trade deal," the Treasury Secretary said.

Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries starting February 1. The tariff increases to 25% in June, unless there is a deal related to the purchase of Greenland.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the tariff unacceptable and said he would ask the EU to use its strongest tool of retaliation. Scott showed no concern about that response.

Bessent said Trump is using economic pressure to prevent a military conflict. He described Greenland as part of a broader strategy that includes competition in the Arctic. When asked if Trump's stance on Europe was a negotiating tactic, he said the president is not changing course.

"The Europeans project weakness, the US projects strength," he said. He added that Trump believes stronger security is not possible without Greenland becoming part of the United States. /CNA
