Tariffs and the Greenland issue/ Italy ready to mediate between the US and

Italy has expressed its willingness to mediate between the US and Europe. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is considered by European leaders to have a good relationship with Trump.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said: "I believe that Italy, because of its nature, its capacity for mediation and its ability to talk to everyone, can play a positive role in finding agreements. " He added that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is " in dialogue with the United States, but also with the Europeans."

Tajani continued: "There is absolutely no need for trade wars or conflicts. We need dialogue and we need to find solutions that do not harm anyone."

Meloni: "I told Trump what I thought"

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump a "mistake." She said she had spoken to Trump "and told him my opinion."

At the same time, Meloni tried to ease tensions between the US and Europe. There was "a problem with communication and understanding ," she said. "From the US perspective, the message from across the Atlantic had not been clear."

Eyes from Davos

The World Economic Forum in Davos could also provide an opportunity for talks on the crisis. Donald Trump is expected to go there on Wednesday. Chancellor Merz will also be in Davos.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said after a phone call with Trump: " We will continue to work in this direction " and looks forward to meeting with Trump in Davos.

Italy, one of NATO's founding members, did not send any troops to Greenland for the Danish-led reconnaissance mission. Seven other European countries participated in the mission alongside Denmark: Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland. /DW
