Kremlin reports Putin invited to join Gaza 'peace board'

The Kremlin has announced that Vladimir Putin has been invited to join Donald Trump's "peace board", created last week to oversee a ceasefire in Gaza.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that Russia was seeking to "clarify all the nuances" of the offer with Washington before giving its response.

The alleged invitation comes as Putin shows no sign of ending his occupation of Ukraine. The Russian president has repeatedly rejected proposals for a ceasefire along the current fronts.

The Kremlin also said Monday that Putin's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos this week and meet with members of the U.S. delegation there. It is not clear whether those meetings will include discussions on the Gaza board.

The invitation to Putin, which has yet to be confirmed by Washington, raises more questions about the intended agenda for the board. Originally, it was part of Trump’s proposals for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza and was supposed to oversee the transition to a lasting peace in the territory and oversee the work of a Palestinian committee of experts, also announced last week, that would oversee the day-to-day running of Gaza. The vaguely outlined scheme was approved in a UN Security Council resolution in November.

The first board appointments, announced Friday, included Trump himself as chairman, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, current US Secretary of State Marco Rubio; Trump's problem-solving envoy, real estate developer Steve Witkoff; the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner; and World Bank President Ajay Banga.

Over the weekend, it was reported that Trump had also extended invitations to the leaders of a number of countries, including Argentina, Paraguay, Turkey, Egypt, Canada and Thailand. Belarus announced that its leader, Alexander Lukashenko, had been invited and that he had welcomed the invitation./CNA, translated by The Guardian
