Hungary will make the issue of emigration a priority when it is in charge of the EU Presidency

Hungary will make the issue of emigration a priority when it is in charge of the
Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, has declared for the German media that he will make the issue of emigration a key topic when Hungary is at the head of the EU, in the six-month Presidency.

Orban told media group Funke that he welcomes the position of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is currently analyzing how asylum procedures can be carried out from countries outside the European bloc.

Currently, the presidency of the EU is held by Belgium, while from July 1 Hungary will be in this position.

Orban has said that Hungary is already implementing a policy for asylum applications to be evaluated in third countries, for example at the Hungarian embassy in Belgrade, before applicants are given the green light to enter the country.

In June, the European Court of Justice ordered Hungary to pay a fine of 200 million euros and an additional 1 million euros per day if it does not implement the decision to change its asylum policies.

The fine follows a December 2020 court ruling that ordered Budapest to change procedures to guarantee international protection and the return of third-world nationals.

The presidency of the EU is a rather bureaucratic position and involves the creation of agendas and the development of discussions around a decision, and it is mainly about finding a compromise between the countries of the European bloc, when there is a lack of clear consensus.

Hungary has pledged to be a fair mediator, although Budapest does not have the best relations with EU institutions, due to issues related to the rule of law and corruption./ Rel
