At least 42 people were killed in Israeli strikes in Gaza City, local authorities run by the militant group Hamas said.

The attack, which took place near Al-Shati camp, one of eight refugee camps in the Gaza Strip, killed 24 people, according to a local official who spoke to the Reuters news agency. Another 18 Palestinians were killed in an attack in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood.

In a statement, the Israeli military said its warplanes hit two Hamas military infrastructure facilities.

The war began after Hamas, a group designated a terrorist organization by the United States, Britain and the European Union, launched an attack in southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 hostages, according to Israeli data.

Israel's military response in Gaza has devastated much of the territory, killing more than 37,551 people and wounding more than 85,911 others, according to Gaza's health ministry, which is run by Hamas and does not distinguish between civilians and fighters. /VOA
