Barcelona, ??a top Spanish holiday destination, has announced it will stop renting apartments to tourists by 2028, a drastic move as it seeks to curb high housing costs and make the city livable for residents.

The city's leftist mayor, Jaume Collboni, said on Friday that by November 2028, Barcelona will revoke the licenses of 10,101 apartments currently approved as short-term rentals, The Guardian reports. 

The short-term rental boom in Barcelona, ??Spain's most visited city by foreign tourists, has left some residents unable to afford an apartment as rents have risen by 68% in the past 10 years and the cost of buying a home has soared. by 38%, said Collboni. Access to housing had become a driver of inequality, especially for young people, he added.

Spain's Socialist housing minister, Isabel Rodriguez, said she supports Barcelona's decision.

Vacation rental platform Airbnb did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"Collboni is making a mistake that will lead to poverty and unemployment," Barcelona tourist apartment association Apartur said in a statement, adding that the ban would cause an increase in illegal tourist apartments.

Hotels will benefit from the move. The opening of new hotels in the city's most popular areas was banned by a far-left party that governed Barcelona between 2015 and 2023, but Collboni has signaled he could ease the restriction./ CNA
