The next generation of EU officials must defend freedom and democracy, the ideals of the European Union, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a speech today. The German president spoke in the Belgian city of Bruges to graduate students at the College of Europe, an elite institution training the next generation of staff in EU institutions.

"There has never been a more difficult time to fight for Europe, but I am also sure that there has never been a more important time to fight for Europe," Steinmeier said. He urged the students to be optimistic despite "a Europe where a state of crisis seems to be the new normal".

Encouraging the students to be hopeful, Steinmeier recalled the challenges his generation faced with the end of communism and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

"Yes, it is indeed a difficult time to enter public service. Every generation feels the call of history. Every generation faces the challenges that define it. However, I think it's fair to say that your generation is being asked more many generations ago,” Steinmeier said, highlighting the challenges of climate change and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.


The German president has warned of an increase in division and extreme rhetoric in European politics following the success of the far-right in the European Parliament elections.

Steinmeier called on students to defend democracy and the European Union from extremism so that young Europeans are not "killed again because of nationalism and hatred"./CNA
