"The EU Council approved the EU's general positions, including the negotiating frameworks, for the accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova," she said on the X social network, adding that "this paves the way for the start of the talks." on Tuesday, June 25, in Luxembourg".

The Council of the EU gathers the representatives of the governments of the 27 countries that make up the bloc.

The official start of talks with Ukraine will take place at 15:30, while with Moldova at 18:00.

The announcement comes two weeks after the European Commission recommended opening the process, saying both countries are sufficiently prepared for the formal opening of the process to become a member of the EU.

Ukraine and Moldova applied to join the EU shortly after the occupation began, receiving candidate country status in June 2022.

In December, they got the green light to start talks.

Shortly after the EU presidency's announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the decision, writing in X that he feels "grateful" to the bloc for its "strong will".

"Millions of Ukrainians and different generations of our people are fulfilling their European dream. Ukraine is returning to Europe, where it has had its place for centuries, as a full member of the European community," Zelensky wrote.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu reacted to the news on Friday, saying she had signed the document opening membership talks with the bloc.

"Membership in the EU is our path to peace, prosperity and a better life for all citizens," Sandu wrote.

Reacting to Brussels' announcement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that EU integration is a sovereign matter for Chisinau, but added that there are "many Moldovans who also want closer ties with Russia"./ REL
