Human-caused climate change has fueled extreme heat waves in the US and Mexico by about 35 times, scientists say.

The World Weather Attribution (WWA) group studied excessive heat between May and early June, when the US heat wave was concentrated in southwestern states including California, Nevada and Arizona.

Extreme temperatures in Mexico also claimed lives during this period, the BBC reports.

Scientists said such a heat wave was now four times more likely than it was in 2000, driven by planet-warming emissions.

Experts say many extreme weather events, including heat waves, are becoming more frequent and more intense as a result of climate change.

"The results of our study should be taken as another warning that our climate is warming to dangerous levels. Potentially deadly and record-breaking temperatures are occurring more frequently in the US, Mexico and Central America due to climate change. As long as people fill the atmosphere with fossil fuel emissions, the heat will only get worse - vulnerable people will continue to die and the cost of living will continue to rise," said Izidine Pinto, researcher at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute.

Scientists highlighted the danger of high night temperatures, a serious threat to health as the body does not have time to rest and recover./ CNA
