The Iranian Nobel Prize winner is sentenced to a year in prison

The Iranian winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Narges Mohammadi, has been sentenced to one year in prison for her activism, her lawyer Mustafa Nili announced today.

The latter told the Associated Press that Mohammadi was convicted on charges of propaganda against the system. 

According to him, the sentence was handed down after Mohammadi called on voters to boycott the recent parliamentary elections in Iran, sent letters to parliamentarians in Europe and made comments about the torture and sexual assault suffered by an Iranian journalist and political activist.

She is housed in Iran's Evin prison.

Mohammadi is the 19th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and the second Iranian woman, after human rights activist Shirin Ebadi, who received the award in 2003./CNA
