More than 70 million Americans – about one in five – are living under the threat of extremely high temperatures or other forms of extreme weather.

Warnings have also been issued in four Canadian provinces, as most of the continent is engulfed by the heat wave.

Officials said temperatures in the US could reach as high as 38 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and Thursday.

Chicago is one of the places that has set a daily record - more than 35 degrees Celsius at this time of the year.

Scientists have said that extreme heat is becoming more and more frequent as a result of climate change.

Firefighters are battling fires north of Los Angeles, and as a result, hundreds of people have been forced to leave their homes.

Meanwhile, Texas is expected to face torrential rain, while parts of Montana have been warned of light snow in June.

The hot weather has been described by the National Weather Service as the first heat wave of the season.

However, the Copernicus Climate Change Service has said that Europe is the fastest warming continent on the planet.

In April, Copernicus said that climate change is worsening the health of Europeans, and as a result the number of deaths is increasing./ REL
