President Joe Biden is expected to announce a sweeping new measure on Tuesday that would protect tens of thousands of people married to American citizens from deportation, a tough immigration measure this election year that many Democrats had called for.

According to three sources briefed on the White House's plans, President Biden will announce the new program at a White House event to mark the Obama administration's program that offered protection from deportation to young undocumented immigrants.

This new measure would allow about 490,000 spouses of US citizens to apply for an immigration program that would protect them from deportation and give them the opportunity to have work authorization if they have lived in the US for at least 10 years, two sources told The Associated Press. The two sources declined to be identified because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the announcement.

The White House declined to comment on the announcement.

President Biden has faced political pressure to prove he has border security under control. As he prepares to run again against Republican Donald Trump, earlier this month President Biden signed an executive order that significantly limits the number of people seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border.

Former President Trump has said that he will deport millions of immigrants if he is re-elected. /Taken from VOA
